Hurling championship gets under way

The first round of the 2013 Galway Senior Hurling Championship starts this weekend.

On Saturday in Gort (6.30pm ) Loughrea take on Liam Mellows in a preliminary game, while Tynagh Abbey Duniry are hot favourites to defeat Kiltormer in Ballinasloe (5pm ).

That game is followed (6.30pm ) by former champions Clarinbridge, who are 2/5 with Mulhollands to defeat Tommy Larkins (9/4 ).

Padraig Pearses take on Moycullen at 5pm in Athenry, while in Loughrea at 6.30pm, Beagh and Mullagh do battle.

The Turloughmore and Carnmore clash has been put back by a week.

Sunday’s action boasts two attractive double headers in Loughrea and Athenry.

In Loughrea there is an early start for the Maors as Gort face Athenry at noon and that is followed by Kinvara and Portumna at 1.30pm.

Over in Athenry, the double header sees Castlegar taking on Sarsfields at 3pm and that is followed up with the All Ireland club champions St Thomas starting the defence of their title against Ardrahan.

Mulhollands bookmakers have odds for all those games and they also have outright betting for what promises to be a really open championship. St Thomas are favourites with them at 9/4, with Moycullen the rank outsiders at 200/1.
