Green Dragon, the Irish entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, is currently fourth overall on the leaderboard after completing leg two of the race from Cape Town to Cochin, India. The Green Dragon crew, along with seven other teams, depart on leg three from Cochin on Saturday, and are due to arrive in Singapore on December 23.
In the New Year the Volvo Ocean Race will continue to China, Rio de Janeiro, and Boston before arriving in Galway on May 23 for a two-week action packed stopover of festival and sailing events. The race then continues to Maarstrand, Stockholm, and St Petersburg where it finishes in late June 2009.
The Green Dragon project originated in Galway with the Irish Government, through Failte Ireland, supporting the bid for the Galway stopover.
This will be the biggest sporting event that Ireland has hosted since the Ryder Cup and it is estimated that it will generate €43 million to the local economy.
To celebrate the opening of the Green Dragon shop the Galway Advertiser is offering a reader the chance to win a Green Dragon t-shirt and baseball cap.
