A newly-formed senior soccer club, Galway WFC, is issuing a call to the Galway business community to support bringing Women’s National League football to Galway this September.
Galway’s application to enter the Bus ÉireannWNL has been warmly received already by the FAI, while the Galway FA is also backing the club which will see it play its home games in Eamon Deacy Park, Terryland, from September 2013.
President Michael D Higgins, in welcoming the new club, said it was a“ valuable initiative”. “Across the various codes, Galway has a proud sporting tradition – not least in the area of soccer. Any endeavour that promotes greater participation by women in sport is to be encouraged,” he said.
The club is asking businesses throughout Ireland for support to enable it to compete in the FAI Bus ÉireannWNL, which was formed in 2011. Currently there are seven teams in the league, Shamrock Rovers, DLR Waves, Peamount United, Raheny United, Cork Womens FC, Castlebar Celtic and Wexford Youths.
Club chairman Stephan Moran said: “We have been delighted with the level of interest we have received to date in Galway WFC. While we appreciate that finances are tightening, we are hoping to reach out to a unique demographic which will appeal to many companies. We have many attractive packages to suit all budgets.”
