Major print exhibitions for the city

THROUGHOUT DECEMBER, the Galway Arts Centre will host two major exhibitions of the best in contemporary printmaking - Impressions and Norman Ackroyd: Irish Etchings.

Both exhibitions will open today. Impressions will be opened by Norman Ackroyd at 5.30pm in the Galway Arts Centre while the Norman Ackroyd exhibition will be opened at 7.30pm in the Galway City Museum by city arts officer James C Harrold.

Twenty years ago Galway based artists Leonie King and Sioban Piercy organised the first Impressions print exhibition to promote and highlight the quality and artistry of this country’s printmakers. Today, Impressions is a major showcase for established and emerging print artists.

This year’s show is curated by the director of Bonham’s Auctioneers Print Department, Robert Kennan, who selected 100 pictures from some 340 submitted. Prizes for the works have been awarded to Martina Cleary, Sue Cunliffe, Lelia Pedersen, Ruth Le Gear, and Jill McKeown.

London based artist Norman Ackroyd, a previous curator of Impressions will show his own works at the Galway City Museum. He is a frequent visitor to the west of Ireland, capturing the unique meteorological and landscape formations of the Aran Islands, Inis Boffin, and the Burren in his skilful etchings. He was recently been awarded a CBE for his lifelong contribution to printmaking.

Admission is free and both shows run until January 17. For more information contact Maeve Mulrennan on 091 - 565886 or email [email protected]
