The Whip to play Cuba*

THE STONE Roses, Joy Division/New Order, and Happy Mondays all hailed from Manchester and many of those bands combined electronica or house music with rock.

When house and rave exploded in the late 1980s, Manchester - particularly The Haçienda - was the new music’s English focal point. The Mondays and the Roses kept an eye on what was going on and combined rave rhythms and feel into their rock approach.

Continuing that tradition are Mancunains The Whip, who describe their sound as being like “Robocop, part man, part machine”. They play Cuba* on Saturday December 20.

The Whip - Danny Saville (keyboards ), Lil Fee (drums ), Nathan Sudders (bass ), and Bruce Carter (vocals/guitar ) - are renowned for their energetic live performances which draw heavily on club culture.

“Club culture from the last few years really,” Bruce Carter told www.neumagazine.co.uk “We love going out to clubs or dancing after we’ve played in clubs, it’s the best environment to hear new sounds and fresh stuff.”

He also feels confident about the current music scene in Manchester.

“It’s a good time for Manchester,” he said. “The cool thing is there are a lot of bands doing stuff but it’s all coming from different sorts of musical backgrounds. I guess a lot of bands have come from Manchester in the past so it’s good to get some fresh meat cooking on the musical griddle.”

The Whip are currently working on a new album which should be out by next summer. In the meantime check out their debut, X Marks Destination.
