Triple Olympian in Galway this weekend

Triple Olympic water polo gold medalist, Gergely Kiss from Hungary, will be the special guest at the Irish u-14 Water Polo Cup in the NUIG Kingfisher pool this weekend.

Kiss won gold medals at successive Olympic Games in 2000, 2004, 2008 and will attend the tournament in Galway on Saturday from 4pm and Sunday from 10am.

The Hungarian is a legend in the sport of water polo, having played more than 800 games for his country, scoring more than 1000 goals. Hungary is the most successful team in the history of the Olympic Games, having a total of nine Olympic gold medals for 1932, 1936, 1952, 1956, 1964, 1976, 2000, 2004 and 2008. Kiss, who is regarded as one of the best left-handed water polo players in the world, scored 14 goals in eight games in Sydney 2000.

This year’s tournament features 12 teams in four groups with local clubs Corrib and Tribe boasting four teams.
