•Renmore AFC Soccer Club is running a Race Night in the Huntsman Inn College Road on Saturday March 9 to raise funds for the running of the soccer club. All are invited to attend, including anyone not directly involved in the club who would like to participate. The night will consist of a full race card of 10 races shown on large screen TVs with full tote facilities available. There will be an 'auction race' where punters can buy a horse with a chance for a major prize. There will also be lots of spot prizes. • Connacht GAA has appointed current Roscommon footballer Cathal Cregg as the provincial strength and conditioning officer. Cregg, who is the first person to occupy this new role, is a member of the Western Gaels club in Roscommon and is the current captain of the Roscommon senior intercounty team.
• Now in their third year, the latest edition of the Kinvara Rock And Road Half Marathon and 10k aatracted 1,200 competitors. Local runner Matt Bidwell of GCH claimed the 10k event in a time of 32.56, followed by teammate Owen Byrne in 34.16 and Timmy Glavey in a time of 34.58. The women’s race was won by Anna Crooks of Ennis Track in a time of 39.15, with Sinead Foran of Athenry and Barbara Dunne of GCH in second and third respectively.The half marathon was won by the Michael Shannon of St John’s AC in Clare in a time of 70.32, with Adam Thiel and Brian Furey in second and third, while MSB AC’s Eimear O’Leary won the women’s event in 1:26.
•Loughrea’s young athletes were among the medal winners at the Connacht Juvenile Track and Field Championships in Athlone at the weekend.The club claimed their first relay medals in more than 20 years when the u-12 4x100m girls team of Chloe Casey, Rebecca Shiel, Emma Stewart and Aoibhin Farrell, and u-14 4x200m team of Arlene Earls, Erica Leslie, Siobhan McGrath and Emma Reynolds took gold medals. Caomhan Conaghan enjoyed a gold medal haul, winning the u-19 high jump with a personal best (1.92m ), the long jump (5.74m ) and the triple jump (12.20m ), while clubmate Janic Schulte won silver in all three events. Mary Barrett took gold in the senior women’s high jump (1.25m ) and the shot putt with a throw of 10.76m.
