Galway’s MOF Chemist Titans have claimed Basketball Ireland’s men’s Southern Conference division one title for the first time.
The Titans, who will conclude their last regular season game against local rivals Maree on Saturday in Calasanctius College, ensured they topped the conference with two convincing victories over Castleisland and St Matthews Cork last weekend.
Even without sharpshooter Brendan Barile, the locals produced an exhibition of basketball in Renmore against Castleisland on Sunday. Paulius Pelzius helped the home side into a 13-1 lead at the start of the game before Castleisland went 18 - 17 ahead at the break, and they maintained this one-point lead at half time.
Andre Tongo led the charge for the home side in the third with Tomz Fabricius nailing some superb shots, and Taofik Mustaffa and Gintaris Sedebskis mopping up to keep the scoreline ticking over. Leading by 12 at the third, the Titans went on to win by 80-54 to secure the Southern Conference title for the first time.
The previous evening Titans were convincing 115-82 winners over Fr Matthews Cork.
