A public event which aims to promote awareness of Fairtrade and encourage people to buy Fairtrade products will take place in the Amnesty Action Centre in Galway next week. The talk is part of a series of events taking place around the country during Fairtrade Fortnight.
The event will feature Fairtrade representative Martha Lunji, who will explain why we should look after the food we love and the people who grow and produce it. It will take place in the Amnesty Action Centre in St Augustine Street on Thursday February 28 from 8pm to 9pm.
The national highlights of Fairtrade Fortnight include a series of funny online shorts starring Neil Delamere, Tiny James, Gearoid Farrelly, and Ger Hough who will say a collective “Fair play” to the people of Ireland to recognise the public’s support of Fairtrade, and encourage them to “Go further for Fairtrade” this year. The series will be launched on Facebook at www.facebook.com/FairtradeIreland Fairtrade Fortnight unites all Fairtrade supporters, bringing together retailers, manufacturers, producers, and consumers.
“Without our support now, farmers in developing countries face a difficult and uncertain future,” said Peter Gaynor, executive director of Fairtrade Ireland. “Smallholders in developing countries are increasingly hit by fluctuating commodity prices affecting their income and the prices they pay for the food they buy themselves, rising global food prices, rising production costs, and increasingly the impacts of climate change. Notwithstanding the ongoing economic recession in Ireland, Fairtrade continued to grow in 2012. We are asking people to go further again for Fairtrade in 2013, but we are also saying Fair Play for all their support so far. We expect to be making a number of significant commercial announcements during the fortnight that will show how resilient Fairtrade is and how companies are still committed to Fairtrade.”
