No name change for Galway West

A proposal to rename the Galway West constituency as Galway West-South Mayo have been refused consideration by Environment Minister Phil Hogan.

The Galway West consistency has been expanded ahead of the 2016 General Election to take in areas of south Mayo, including Shrule, Cong, and Ballinrobe.

This led to calls from Fine Gael TDs Brian Walsh and John O’Mahoney to rename the constituency, while this week Fianna Fáil agriculture spokesperson and Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív tabled an amendment to the Electoral Amendment Bill 2013 for the same. However his motion was rejected by the Government at the Environment sub-committee.

“It is very disappointing that Minister Hogan and his Fine Gael and Labour colleagues have rejected this simple proposal,” said Dep Ó Cuív, “despite the fact it is the will of the people in South Mayo to be recognised in the newly drawn constituency.”
