Connacht Rugby documentary could scoop two IFTAs this weekend

The West’s Awake, the critically acclaimed documentary on Connacht Rugby by Galway company Iris Productions, is in with a chance of scooping two IFTA awards this weekend.

The documentary, broadcast on TG4 last October, focused on Connacht Rugby’s inaugural Heineken Cup season which culminated in the victory over Harlequins in The Sportsground in January 2012.

The programme is up for two awards in the craft/technical categories (television ) for editing and for sound. The IFTA awards take place in Dublin on Saturday and will be broadcast on RTÉ from 9.30pm.

“To be nominated in two categories is great recognition of the work put in by all the crew on this project,” said The West’s Awake producer/director Kieran Hartigan. “Beyond the obvious sporting narrative, the documentary was primarily about a sense of place and belonging.”

Mr Hartigan also acknowledged the contribution of outgoing coach Eric Elwood and his squad. “Fundamentally this is Connacht Rugby’s story,” he said. “It would not have been possible but for the good grace of Eric Elwood, the management team, and all the squad
