Public asked to help identify man who died following offshore rescue

Gardaí are appealing to the public for help in identifying a man who died after being rescued from the water off the coast of the city at the weekend.

A search and rescue operation was mounted on Saturday morning after the man was spotted in the River Corrib near the Spanish Arch at 8.30am. He was later found in the water at Renmore Point, near Ballyloughane Beach, by an RNLI rescue crew. The man was brought to University Hospital Galway, where he was pronounced dead.

Gardaí have yet to identify the man and a Garda spokesperson said a search of missing persons reports had not yielded a match.

The man is believed to be in his early forties. He is described as approximately six feet tall, clean shaven, with green eyes and black hair, streaked with grey. He was wearing black chinos, a black T-shirt, a white hoodie, and black canvas shoes. He also wore wooden rosary beads around his neck. The man had no tattoos, scars, piercings, visible marks, or distinguishing features. He had no possessions on him.

Anyone who believes they may know this man is asked to contact Galway Garda Station at 091 538000. Gardaí can provide photos of the man to anyone who can assist in identifying him.
