Fitzgibbon kicks off at GMIT today

The first rounds of the Irish Daily Mail Fitzgibbon Cup Championship begin today (Thursday ) hosted by GMIT Hurling Club.

It is the first time the prestigious student competition has been hosted at the college with 500 students from 14 third level colleges taking part.

The semi-finals place in Carnmore and Athenry on Friday March 1 with the final, which will be televised live on TG4, scheduled for Saturday March 2 at Pearse Stadium (2.30pm ).

Host club GMIT are in action at 3pm today in Carnmore when they face holders UCC. The Galway college boasts inter-county players, captain Ger O’Halloran, Paul Hoban and Tadgh Haran.

Also in their group are game NUIG, with Joseph Cooney and Naill Burke, and Mary Immaculate who meet in Dangan at 1.30pm. The second and third rounds takes place on February 7 and 12.
