Ó Cuív seeks constituency name change to Galway West-South Mayo

Éamon Ó Cuív has joined his constituency colleague Brian Walsh, and possible constituency colleague John O’Mahoney, in calling for Galway West to be renamed.

Dep Ó Cuív is calling for the constituency to be called Galway West-South Mayo as the electoral area now includes the areas around Cong, Shrule, Ballinrobe, Kilmaine, and Garrymore.

Speaking in the Dáil, the Connemara based TD said he will seek to amend the Electoral Amendment Bill 2013 in order to rename the constituency.

“Maintaining a strong county identity is very important, and no more important than in Mayo whether it comes to sport or politics,” he said. “People in south Mayo are anxious they would be officially recognised in the newly redrawn constituency. There is no reason why such a simple amendment should not be recognised by the Oireachtas
