Connacht Senior Schools’ Cup winners Marist Athlone once again got the better of their rivals Sligo Grammar in this year’s Schools’ League final.
In a repeat of both cup and league finals last year, the in-form Marist defeated Sligo by 13 - 0 in the recent final at Ballyhaunis.
Marist, who claimed their long awaited first senior cup crown last season, now start their title defence in confident form.
All Marist’s points came in the opening half. They got off the mark with a penalty from Barry Goode, and although Sligo enjoyed some forward dominance, Marist’s potent backline again struck when Cormac Langan crossed for a try, which Goode converted.
In other news the Heineken Junior Cup second round is scheduled for this weekend. NUIG, who overcame Portumna by 10 - 7 in round one, face Sligo, Corinthians and Dunmore meet after both had byes in the first round, while Buccaneers, who enjoyed a 41-0 first-round win over Ballinrobe host OLBC. Galwegians travel to Tuam after first-round byes, south Galway clubs Loughrea and Gort clash, and Monivea must travel to Ballina.
