Corinthians still setting the pace

Corinthians have regained second spot in the Ulster Bank League after a bonus-point 30-8 win over Greystones on Saturday afternoon.

The home side ran in five tries to secure full points and join leaders Banbridge on 25 points.

Left winger Eoin Daly grabbed Corinthians’ first try after a solid scrum before Greystones captain and outhalf Ross Spillane slotted a penalty when the home side was penalised for offside.

However Corinthians dominated the remainder of the half. O’Flynn knocked over a penalty in front of the posts on 15 minutes, and soon after added a second try from lock Gary Warde following a forward surge.

Although the Cloonacauneen outfit lost prop Tom Toolan to the sinbin for foul play, Corinthians’ centre James Buckley carved out an opportunity for O’Flynn to score a third try before the break, stretching the lead to 20-3.

Greystones created several opportunities after the restart, but strong defence, particularly by flanker Sean Gerity and O’Flynn kep them out. Eventually, however, the visitors got in for a try with substitute lock Billy Norman getting the touchdown after a strong forward drive.

When Tom Toolan received a red card for his second offence with 15 minutes of play remaining, it could have spelled disaster for the home side. Instead they raised their game again, brought up to the visitors’ five metre line and following a strong maul by the Corinthian pack, scrumhalf Steven Bruce touched down out wide.

Corinthians’ superior pack ensured they remained on the front foot and before the final whistle Gormley ran in for their fifth try.
