The Galway City Council’s Christmas Park and Ride campaign is in full swing and the local authority is calling on daily commuters, particularly those who work in the city centre, to take full advantage of it.
To encourage workers to leave their cars at Galway Racecourse and park and ride to the city centre, the council is offering an all-day parking fare of just €2 which includes bus travel to the city centre for the car driver and all his/her passengers. Also, a bus will leave every 15 minutes to Galway Coach Station, Fairgreen, every morning from 7.30am to 9.30pm (Monday to Saturday ).
Commenting on the service one city centre worker stated: “I give full marks to the park and ride service, the staff are lovely…I got on to a warm, comfortable, bus and arrived in the city centre all for just €2 return…I couldn’t believe it!”
Iarnród Éireann and Bus Éireann anticipate strong uptake of their respective park and ride Christmas initiatives, which offer reduced fares on key commuter routes to the city.
The Galway Transportation Unit says these combined initiatives will reduce traffic congestion on the east of the city in the run up to Christmas allowing commuters “some stress free travel time to the city centre”.
