HOW CAN stand-up comedy be performed by a man with tape stuck across his mouth rendering him incapable to speech?
This is the puzzle brilliantly and entertainingly resolved by the New Zealand comic Sam Wills through his alter ego, The Boy With Tape On His Face, and Wills is bringing the boy to Galway for the Bulmer’s Galway Comedy Festival.
Through mime, vaudeville, puppetry, action, and audience participation, The Boy delivers a different kind of stand-up. Expect gunfights, and even Darth Vader and John Lennon impersonations.
His shows were the runaway hit of the Edinburgh Fringe in 2010 and a sell out when he returned in 2011. “Endlessly inventive, hysterically funny – fight for a ticket,” declared Time Out while chortle.co.uk called the shows “a truly magical experience”.
The Boy appeals to audiences of all ages and his silent comedy is the perfect antidote to the motor mouth comic approach. In fact Wills came up with The Boy to challenge himself to stage a show without words. What started as a challenge quickly grew into a global phenomenon, leading to awards, stellar reviews, sell-out tours.
See The Boy With Tape On His Face in the Radisson Live Lounge on Friday October 26 at 8pm with Pat Shortt, Benny Boot, and Barry Murphy; and on Sunday 27 at 8pm in the town Hall Theatre with Ardal O’Hanlon, John Colleary, and Barry Murphy.
