Attempted robbery accused sent for trial

A 21-year-old Ballybane man accused of attempted robbery has been sent forward for trial to next month’s sittings of the Galway Circuit Criminal Court.

Martin Sweeney with an address at 34 Glenbaun, Ballybane, appeared before Galway District Court on Monday charged with attempted robbery at Eyre Square on March 22, 2012.

Garda Mark Kelly gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the accused on the morning of the court sitting in relation to the one count of attempted robbery.

Inspector Mick Coppinger told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to the accused being sent forward for trial. He added that Sweeney is further charged with two counts of assault which arise out of the same incident and that it is “the view of the DPP that they will be added to the indictment”.

Judge Mary Fahy made the order for Sweeney to be returned for trial to the next sittings of Galway Circuit Criminal Court commencing October 4. In relation to the two counts of assault at a premises in Eyre Street on March 22, 2012, Sweeney was remanded on continuing bail to January 14 next.
