Supporters prepare for the 16th minute?

Every supporter can play a part in getting Galway over the line on All Ireland final day.

This Sunday Galway are back in Croke Park where they take on Kilkenny in the All Ireland final replay.

To have equalled the Kilkenny onslaught on two occasions in one season is a remarkable feat, but to win on Sunday will require a mammoth effort - not just from the players, but also the supporters.

As a result the Galway Hurling Supporters’ Club is urging all Galwegians to support this achievement by becoming Galway’s 16th Man.

The 16th Man will take full flight in the 16th minute of the first and second halves when a 16th Man banner will rise in Hill 16. This banner will be the cue for Galway fans to start singing ‘The Fields Of Athenry’.

The club believes this will lift Croke Park and, importantly, give the Galway team the extra support they deserve on the day.

The GHSC is asking every Galway supporter to share and tweet Galway’s 16th Man in a bid to ensure the Liam McCarthy Cup returns to the west after a 24 year wait.

The club is also urging everyone to fly the Galway flag and buntings wherever possible.

“ By cloaking cars, homes, and business premises in maroon and white, Galwegians will be communicating their best wishes to the team and remind them that the city and county are behind them as they approach their final preparations before the big day.”

Pictures of the most decorated club, home, car and person will be put up on its the club’s Facebook page.

Winning any competition demands a collective effort, the club says, and everyone has a role as part of Galway’s quest.

“Everyone wants Fergal Moore to be the man lifting the Liam McCarthy Cup over a wave of maroon and white.

“That wave begins in the streets of Galway before it can travel eastwards to Croke Park, and it will be the response of the people that will determine the level of support that will arrive in Croke Park. There is an old adage that preaches ‘Ask not what your county can do for you. Ask what you can do for your county.’ Now is the time to testify.”
