Mervue wins playground makeover

Mervue community playground in Galway city is due to receive a playground makeover worth €2,000 after beating off stiff competition to win first prize in a national competition.

Ten playgrounds had been shortlisted and voting took place online before voting closed at midnight last Friday. Mervue won by just six votes with a total count of 1,050 votes.

“We’re delighted with the response to the competition as it shows parents getting together to make the best of local amenities,” says Seamus Murphy, MD of Murphy Playground Services, the Galway based businesses, which along with Mykidstime.ie and Dublin business Graffiti Wipeout sponsored the competition.

”We hope that the makeover of Mervue playground will encourage parents and children in the area to make even more use out of what is a very busy and much needed local facility. Taking your child to a local playground is a great way to get some fresh air and build physical activity into the daily routine.”

Mervue playground will receive a complete cleaning of all surfaces and equipment including removal of graffiti, moss and algae, leaving it clean and fresh and ready for play. The two runners up Oliver Bond playground in Dublin 8 and Moneymore playground in Drogheda, Co Louth will each receive graffiti removal kits.

Jill Holtz, co-founder of Mykidstime.ie, said “Earlier this year we launched our Positive Childhood Campaign and play was one of several topics we discussed online. For many parents their local playground is an essential resource. We are very pleased that Murphy Playground Services and Graffiti Wipeout have allowed us to give away such great prizes and to help give something back to local communities.”
