The second annual Galway International Heritage Conference takes place in The Harbour Hotel, The Docks, on Thursday October 4 with the theme being ‘Archives: Celebrating Ireland’s Archival Heritage’.
A range of speakers will address the conference. Catriona Crowe of the National Archives of Ireland will speak on ‘Archives and Society’. Dr Raymond Gillespie, NUI Maynooth, will give a talk entitled ‘Why Archives Matter’.
Eunan Ó Halpin’s topic will be ‘The Archives and the Decade of Commemorations: The Iconic Versus the Enduring’. Benjamin van De Wetering will speak on ‘Protecting your Archives, Caring for your Collection’.
Lar Joye of the National Museum of Ireland’s will give a talk entitled ‘Collecting the Nation’s Archival Material in the National Museum of Ireland’s Collection’.
Christian Schneeberger of the Swiss Theatre Archives in Berne, will speak on ‘The Digital Challenge, Archives of the Future – The Future of Archives’. Comdt Padraic Kennedy will speak about ‘Military Archives Online: A Case Study using Flickr as an online photo gallery’.
The speakers lectures will be collected and published in book form. The conference is co-ordinated by Galway City Council Heritage Officer, Dr Jim Higgins and is funded jointly by Galway City Council and The Heritage Council as an action of the Galway City Heritage Plan.
