Cllr Sean Canney has issued a statement of discontent in his response to the arrival of the new traffic lights on the Tuam Road. The former mayor of Galway has amplified the grief of his Tuam and North Galway based constituents about the inequality they have been subjected to when driving through those traffic lights. As it stands the current light alteration system facilitates those travelling on the N6 with an unfair advantage. This has manifested in a backlog of traffic on the N17.
Cllr Canney is now keen to have the light switching mechanism amended. “I have people coming into me during the day telling me that there’s traffic congestion on the N17. The lighting sequences need to be addressed and I’m confident that if someone goes out and studies the flow of the traffic and tweak with the light changes then the system will work. It’s not fair that they should have to endure such delays.”
Cllr Canney went on to state that this was an issue which was the responsibility of the city council and he was confident that his views would be repeated amongst the other councillors once they are made aware of the situation.
He insisted that this congestion was not there when the roundabout was in use.
“Even in the off peak times there is a build up on the N17 approaching Galway. I am calling on the City Council to review the sequencing of the lights in order to ensure that traffic flows better and to eliminate the build up on the N17”.
