A series of community meetings to organise local involvement in the Government’s tourism initiative, The Gathering, which takes place at a number of venues in Galway over the next month.
The meetings are being organised by local steering groups to allow people to learn more about the initiative, how to get involved, and provide an opportunity to develop ideas for events at local level.
The Gathering, which will take place during 2013, will be the biggest tourism event ever held in Ireland and it is hoped it will attract thousands of the Irish Diaspora from around the globe.
Fine Gael Galway West TD Brian Walsh is encouraging the public and local groups to become involved.
“From both an economic and a tourism perspective, this is a hugely important event that will reach out to our 70-million-strong Irish Diaspora,” he said, “but it is integral to its success there is engagement at every level from national organisations to small community groups.”
Dep Walsh said with Galway’s reputation as “the city of festivals”, that he fully expects “it will play a lead role in The Gathering next year”.
Community meetings will take place in the Loughrea Hotel (Tuesday, 7.30pm ); The Forge, Moycullen (Wednesday, 7.30pm ), and The Westwood Hotel, Galway city, Wednesday October 10, 7.30pm ).
