At a time when HSE West is implementing cost-saving measures delays in filling in insurance claim documentation has meant that a staggering €6 million owed to University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park Hospital remains unpaid, according to Galway city councillor Padraig Conneely.
The Fine Gael councillor who is also chairperson of the HSE Regional Forum (West ) has revealed that as of July 31, 2012, there is an estimated €6 million in unpaid insurance claims and has called on hospital consultants to complete the necessary documentation so that the claims can be processed.
Cllr Conneely said: “The hospitals are unable to claim this oustanding amount because consultants will not sign off on claim forms in order to allow the hospitals to submit claims to private health insurance companies. The €6 million is owing from private beds in public hospitals.
“These consultants have a duty to complete the necessary documentation at a time of serious financial constraints in our public health system.”
