The Sweeney in Galway cinemas next week

“THE SWEENEY’S doin’ ninety, ‘coz they got the word to go, they get a gang of villains by the shed down at Heathrow.”

So did Squeeze, on their classic hit ‘Cool For Cats’, sum up the peculiar Englishness of the rough as nails TV cop series which ran from 1975 to 1978.

Now the series has been made into a film and The Sweeney will be in Galway cinemas on Wednesday September 12.

Detective Inspector Jack Regan (Ray Winstone ) and his loyal partner George Carter (Ben Drew ) are old school crime fighters enforcing the law in a modern underworld.

Armed and dangerous, the Flying Squad (rhyming slang Sweeney Todd ) have their own unique way of operating. However they always get the results. With a bank heist in progress and his old enemy making a re-appearance on the London crime scene, Regan will do whatever it takes to get the job done, even defying orders from the Guv (Damian Lewis ).

The Sweeney is an action thriller directed by Nick Love (The Firm ), co-written by BAFTA winning John Hodge (Trainspotting ), and boasting a terrific British cast including Hayley Atwell (Captain America ) and Steven Mackintosh (Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans ).
