Writing workshops with Susan Millar DuMars

HAVE YOU pages in a shoebox under your bed that you hope to someday turn into a bestseller? Take the plunge and get started with Susan Millar DuMars’ writers’ workshops at the Galway Arts Centre, beginning in September.

Susan is a published poet and fiction writer. Her debut poetry collection, Big Pink Umbrella, was published by Salmon Poetry in 2008. Her first collection of short stories, Lights in the Distance, was published by Doire Press in 2010. Susan is a recipient of the Arts Council Literature Bursary and teaches creative writing to adults and those with special needs. She is a co-founder of the successful Over The Edge reading series, and her third poetry collection, The God Thing, will be released next year.

The course is for writers who are currently working on a project, whether it is a novel, short story, collection of stories, series of poems, play, or a film script. Participants will be asked to read two 15-page extracts from other students’ manuscripts and be prepared for a 20-30 minute discussion. In-class writing exercises will help warm up the writing muscle at the beginning of each class.

The course runs on Tuesdays from 2pm to 4pm and runs for 10 weeks, beginning on September 25. Places must be paid for in advance and cost €120, with a concession rate. To register contact the Galway Arts Centre in Dominick Street, email [email protected], or call 091 565886.

Susan will also be taking classes on Tuesdays from 7pm to 9.30pm at Galway Technical Institute. The intermediate creative writing course runs for eight weeks and costs €120. Exercises and workshops will help each writer find his/her own voice. To book email [email protected], see www, gti.ie, or call 091 581 342.
