ASPIRING GALWAYpoets can have their work appraised by well-known poet Kevin Higgins at a series of workshops at the Galway Arts Centre in September.
Kevin has enjoyed huge success since his first collection, The Boy With No Face, was shortlisted for the 2006 Strong Award for Best First Collection by an Irish Poet. He has since released two more poetry collections, Time Gentlemen, Please and Frightening New Furniture, and his book of essays and reviews Mentioning The War was published earlier this year. Kevin’s next collection of poems, The Ghost in The Lobby, will be published by Salmon Poetry next year.
Many attendees of Kevin’s previous workshops and classes have gone on to success, including in the Cúirt Literary Festival and the Hennessy Award For New Irish Poetry. Kevin Higgins is also a co-organiser of the popular Over The Edge reading series.
Each workshop will run for 10 weeks. They take place on Tuesdays from 7pm to 8.30pm (beginning September 25 ), Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm (beginning September 27 ), and Fridays from 2pm to 3.30pm (beginning September 28 ). The workshops on Tuesdays and Fridays are open to beginners as well as more experienced poets, whereas the Thursday session is an advanced poetry workshop, suitable for those who have attended workshops previously or who have been published.
The workshops cost €110, with a concession rate. All places must be paid for in advance and to reserve a place, contact reception at the Galway Arts Centre in Dominick Street, email [email protected], or call 091 565 886.
