Galway RNLI Lifeboat helped bring a mother and child to safety after their small dinghy got into difficulty near Kinvara yesterday (Wednesday ) afternoon.
The Dublin woman and her four-year-old son were in the dinghy when strong winds caused the vessel to drift up onto Mulrooney Island (between Kinvara village and Parkmore Pier ) at about 12.40pm.
A canoeist who saw they were in difficulty paddled out to check on them and immediately notified the Irish Coastguard who sought the assistance of Galway RNLI Lifeboat.
The Galway lifeboat arrived on the scene within 12 minutes and took them off the island back to shore. The woman and her son, who were on holidays in the area, were wearing lifejackets and were not in any danger. They did not require medical assistance.
Galway Lifeboat Launch Authority Barry Heskin says the circumstances arose due to high winds and an offshore breeze. “Although the mother and her young son were wearing the correct gear and lifejackets, it was insufficient to handle the winds on the bay.”
