Ireland’s first 24 hour dog adoption event takes place on tomorrow Friday August 24 and Saturday August 25. Organised by Galway dog rescue charity MADRA, the event will take place from 8am to 8pm each day at the Trusty Pet Pals dog daycare centre in Briarhill.
The event aims to find homes for dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds which currently reside at the charity’s Connemara kennels. It will also provide a platform for those who wish to give away their dog due a change in circumstances.
“As with every rescue in the country we are dealing with a large volume of unwanted dogs and puppies,” said Marina Fiddler, MADRA chairperson. “With numbers at an all time high we made the decision to host an event which would help us to promote our wonderful dogs and give them the best opportunity to find a new home.”
Due to the recession and the increase in people emigrating, the charity has experienced a surge in requests to take in dogs that can no longer be cared for by their owners. Due to space restrictions and the number of dogs coming in from local authority pounds, it is not always possible for MADRA to take these dogs in. At the adoption event, owners can put their dog’s details on the adoption notice board. For a nominal fee, MADRA will conduct a home check if a successful match is found.
“We encounter many people with heartbreaking stories as to why they can no longer care for their dogs, and we really would love to be in a position to help them,” Ms Fiddler said. “So hopefully this event might provide an alternative solution.”
There will also be demonstrations by dog trainers and agility groups, and local vets will be on hand to give advice. For children, a teddy bear adoption drive will also take place at the event.
The adoption fee of €150 includes neutering, vaccinations, worming, flea treatments, and microchipping. All those wishing to adopt on the day must have completed a successful home check in advance. To arrange a home check, call Marina on 086 8149026.
