CASABLANCA, THE much loved 1942 film, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, will be screened in the Róisín Dubh on Monday August 20 at 8pm.
If you have never seen Casablanca before, now is your chance. If you have seen it before, take the opportunity to see it again, at this event billed as I Can’t Believe You Haven’t Seen...CASABLANCA.
Set in the Moroccan city, Rick Blaine (Bogart ), an exiled American who runs the most popular night-spot in town, comes into the possession of two valuable letters. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in Casablanca, the sycophantic police captain Renault does what he can to please him, including detaining a Czechoslovak underground leader Victor Laszlo.
Much to Rick’s surprise, Lazslo arrives with Ilsa (Bergman ), Rick’s one time love. Rick is very bitter towards Ilsa, who ran out on him in Paris, but when he learns she had good reason to, they plan to run off together again using the letters of transit. But issues of duty, ethics, and a sense of accepting what is past is past, come into play.
The film won Oscars for Outstanding Motion Picture; Best Director for Michael Curtiz; and Best Screenplay for Julius J Epstein, Philip G Epstein, and Howard Koch.
