A County Galway councillor has slammed the Labour Party for its disgraceful attitude towards the self-employed.
Independent Tuam based councillor Seán Canney has come out in defence of the self-employed this week following a claim that self-employed people are manipulating their accounts in order to qualify for grants. Referring to the claim made by Labour Party chairman and TD Colm Keaveney, Cllr Canney has now called on the party to clarify its position on whether they have any evidence to back this up.
Speaking this week, Cllr Canney said: “Small business, self employed people, and farmers are all trying to stay in business, pay all charges including water charges and rates. Nobody can manipulate their accounts and any accusation of this nature needs to be substantiated or withdrawn immediately.
“Self employed people are the backbone of our economy and many are struggling to remain in business. The last thing these people and their families deserve at this disastrous time in the economy is a ridiculous and throw away statement from a Government TD which casts the reputation of these people in a bad light”.
