Rape accused sent for Central Court trial

A 22-year-old Galway man accused of assaulting and raping a woman has been sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court last week and is charged with assaulting a woman causing her harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, and rape at a city housing estate, contrary to Section 48 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape ) Act 1981, on Febaury 5, 2012.

Garda Nollag McAndrew gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the accused man on the day of the court sitting. Inspector Ernie Whyte informed the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has consented to the accused being sent forward for trial at the Central Criminal Court.

Judge Fahy granted legal aid plus one junior and one senior counsel. The accused was then remanded on continuing bail to the next sittings of the Central Criminal Court.
