Galway Fringe Festival theatre @ NUIG

NUI GALWAY is hosting a variety of plays and theatre events in the university’s new Cube Theatre in Áras na Mac Léinn as part of the Galway Fringe Festival.

The Heroism Hotline, a show about how extraordinary solutions sometimes come from the most unlikely heroes, will be staged by The Galway Actors Workshop on July 18 and 29 at 5.30pm. Floating World Productions will stage an absorbing and magical inter-media dance performance entitled Saol on Thursday July 19 at 6pm.

Youth Work Ireland will perform their black comedy Banged Up Broads, a black comedy focusing on the ups and downs experienced by eight young women in prison on Thursday July 19 at 8.30pm and Friday 20 at 6.30pm.

NUI Galway students and staff will also present a series of original works. Ríona Hughes is performing her new comic one woman show Ballyganruaile in which simmering passions and a host of colourful characters create havoc during the fictional town’s literary and garden festival. See it from July 23 to 26 at 6pm and on Friday 27 at 8.30pm.

Dramsoc will present Rewind, which combines dance and music to tell a story of what ifs. See it on July 26, 28, and 29 at 8.30pm and July 27 at 6pm. Wildebeest Theatre Company will present Tan [see separate article].

Also taking place in The Cube is a double bill of Getting The Cure by Robert Higgins, and Serotonin Syndrome: Part III on July 22 at 6pm.

In Getting The Cure, Liam has accidentally spilt the contents of a chip pan over his legs but the search for a healing ointment takes him on a bizarre journey through Galway. Serotonin Syndrome: Part III asks what if you could step inside the memory of a traumatic event and take control.

This will be followed by a triple bill of plays written or directed by recent NUIG graduates of drama from July 22 to 25 at 8.30pm. The bill features award winning playwright Paddy O’Byrne’s Ahhh Lad!!!, a humorous look at the psyche of the modern Irish male; The Three Women, celebrating the female characters of Beckett, Friel, and Shakespeare; and Cathleen Ní Houlihan 2, the Berlin Decision’ by Shaun Leonard.

For fans of film and music there is Girl Uninterrupted by Eve O’Mahony. This show mixes dialogue from film with lyrics from different musical genres that interlink to show the positive influence it has on our lives. See it at 1.15pm today and on Friday 20, and at 6.30pm on Saturday 21.

There will also be a rehearsed reading of Life Security by Drew Dunlap. When Stephen moves to New York he discovers life is not as he planned. See it on Tuesday July 24 and Wednesday 25 at 1pm.

Children can look forward to Truth Fairy, a show inspired by Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes at The Cube on July 28 and 29 at 12.30pm. The show features Sarah O’Toole, Ríona Hughes, and Eimear Kilmartin.

Do you Speak Mermish? is another children’s show which takes place in Áras na Mac Léinn’s The View from July 24 to 29 from 11am to 3pm. Exploring the magical underwater world without getting wet. Splish splosh your way through stories, music, and colour. The show is suitable for those aged up to eight.
