Mercy Secondary School, Meánscoil Mhuire, Newtownsmith, will mark the 75th anniversary of its founding next September with a two-day celebration.
The celebration takes place on September 28 and 29 next and will be opened by President Michael D Higgins. President Higgins will visit at 1.30pm on September 28 and the opening ceremony will be accompanied by the Army Band of the 4th Western Brigade, followed by a variety of entertainment. Light refreshments will also be served.
Mass will be celebrated at the Abbey Church, St Francis Street, at 5pm. This will be followed by a gala dinner at the Radisson Blu Hotel at 7.30pm for past students, teachers, and friends of the Mercy. Past pupils are welcome to attend events, and tickets for the gala dinner are already in great demand. With 500 places filling fast, it is advisable to book as soon as possible. Tickets are €45 and can be bought from the school.
Progress is being made on a commemorative publication to mark the anniversary. The organisers, Charlotte Bennett, Mary Hanniffy Walsh and Lesley Bohan, would like to hear from alumni, and welcome old photographs, anecdotes, and reflections. All photographs and original materials will be returned to contributors.
