Selected, a new programme from the Galway Arts Festival and NUI Galway, will allow a number of students to see how a festivalworks and get hands-on experience with performers and organisers.
On Monday, the festival and NUIG announced details of their 2012 Selected Partnership programme. This is the second year of the partnership which will focus on several different initiatives.
Selected Partnership is an artist development strand of the arts festival for emerging artists and producers. It will see six students from NUIG’s MA in drama and theatre studies take part in the initiative. They will see how a festival is put together, attend shows and post-show talks, and get hands-on experience from performers and organisers.
The students will also meet and take part in seminars given by executives from the Edinburgh Festival, London’s National Theatre, and leading Irish artists and producers.
“Selected gives our students the opportunity to meet with some of the world’s great artists,” said NUIG’s Dr Patrick Longergan. “That involvement has a massive impact, not only on our students’ education but also on their future careers. Selected is one of the key examples of how our drama and theatre programmes set out to blend excellent academic tuition with world-class practical experiences.”
NUIG will also partner with the festival on a new strand of programming called First Thought Talks - a series of public lectures, talks, and ‘in conversation with...’ people like Chic’s Nile Rodgers and playwright Tom Murphy, which will take place during the festival.
