Hession and Loughnane in final Olympic countdown

Galway’s top two athletes Paul Hession and Olive Loughnane continue their preparations for the Olympics.

Along with a number of Ireland’s top athletes, the Galway pair will be competing at The Woodie’s DIYSenior Track and Field Championships in the Morton Stadium on July 7 and 8.

As a result some exciting racing is expected as this will be the last chance for athletes to achieve Olympic qualification times.

Reigning national 200m champion Paul Hession of Athenry AC, who has already achieved his Olympic qualifying time, will face tough competition from training partner and u-23 record holder Steven Colvert (Crusaders AC ). Colvert has run the fastest time in Ireland for the 200m this year (20.57 ).

Both athletes are set to compete in the 100m and 200m, with Hession returning from Finland bound where he is due to compete at the European Championships in Helsinki this weekend.

2009 World Championships silver medalist Olive Loughnane of Loughrea AC will also be competing in the 5000m walk before setting her sights on the London Games.
