Sailing legends will be special guests at Volvo ‘Skippers’ Shindig’

An impressive group of world yachtsmen will attend a special maritime dinner as part of the Volvo Ocean Race celebrations in Galway.

Dubbed the “Skippers’ Shindig”, the event will take place at the global village arena in South Park on Thursday July 5.

Special guests include Volvo Ocean Race legend Jerry Kirby, the American who has sailed in six America’s Cups and two Round the World races - the last occasion with Puma - before joining the Volvo media team. He will be joined by Britain’s famous female sailor, Dee Caffari MBE, who last year became the only woman to have sailed around the world non-stop three times when she finished the Barcelona World Race.

The third guest speaker is Galway Harbour Master, Captain Brian Sheridan, while the organisers also promise a “few guest surprises” on the night where they will be entertained by MC, televison personality and keen sailor Derek Davis.

The event will be of particular interest to sailors and seafaring enthusiasts, who wil be treated to a three-course meal and a full evening of musical entertainment.

Organised by the Galway stopover organisers Let’s Do It Global, the entertainment will be provided byVladimir Jablokov and Classical Twist, featuring Irish tenor Sean Costello. They will be performing a unique hybrid of music from Bach to Beatles and The Stones to Strauss, and will be followed on stage by Big Band music, a DJ and dancing till late.

Tickets to the event cost €75 and are available from the Volvo Ocean Race box office, Steamship House, Dock Street, Galway, or from the website, www,volvooceanracegalway.com
