ine Gael Senator for Galway West Fidelma Healy Eames has welcomed the success of the first Chinese language and culture classes which took place in the Oranmore Lodge Hotel this week.
The free classes have been organised by Senator Healy Eames and a local team as part of the China-Ireland Relations Initiative.
“I was delighted with the turnout and the overall success of the first Chinese language and culture classes in the Oranmore Lodge Hotel. More than 100 people turned up for the classes which were extremely well received.
"The attendees took their first steps in speaking Mandarin Chinese and learning about Chinese culture thanks to a presentation by Ms Dongxia Zhang, School of Languages, Literature and Culture, NUIG.
“The evening was filmed by the Xinhua News Agency, China’s largest broadcaster. Everyone was treated to entertainment afterwards by 'Celtic Flame' who are made up of Brenda Curtin, lead fiddle soloist from Lord of the Dance, and Owen Diviney, who is also on the China Ireland Relations Committee. Attendees were also treated to a host of other singers and got the chance to see professional Irish dancer Rachel Griffin in action.
The classes are due to continue next Monday, June 18 and a private course will be made available from September.
