The new websites for the Galway City Museum, the Galway Arts Centre, and e.Business Galway will be launched at the museum this evening at 6pm.
The theme of the launch will be the use of technology in promoting the arts, the advantages of using the internet for business, entertainment, educational, cultural, and social reasons, and of technology itself as an art.
The Galway Arts Centre site is made up of the various elements the centre represents - its visual arts programme, the Nuns Island Theatre, its education programme, Cúirt, West 47, and Galway Youth Theatre.
The site promotes upcoming events and also archives the centre’s achievements. Included are photo galleries of past performances, video footage of Cúirt readings, and samples of writings.
The city museum’s website promotes the venue’s exhibitions and events and gives information on how to donate objects to the museum. Visitor figures to the museum grew three-fold this year and the museum is hoping the new website will help attract greater numbers in 2009.
The website will facilitate not only tourists however, but schools, community groups, and locals who wish to find out what is new at the city museum.
The launch of the new sites will be in conjunction with the opening of the Home Computing – The Early Years exhibition in the museum.
The exhibition itself will feature a wide selection of PCs, consoles, components, and accessories from the 1970s and 1980s with innovative design and early capabilities. Depending on your age, the exhibition will either generate waves of nostalgia or amaze you with computers that were very big, very expensive, and very, very slow.
The exhibition has been compiled by the e.Galway Group committee, formed by Galway city and county council and chaired by Dr Chris Coughlan. Its remit is to promote the use of broadband in Galway businesses and communities. E.Galway also wants to encourage young people to consider IT as a career path.
