The inaugural Mayfly 10k Challenge takes place on Saturday ( 2.30pm ) along the shores of Lough Corrib in the picturesque village of Oughterard.
The event is open to competitive runners, joggers and walkers, as well as families and teams - and all finishers will receive a medal to mark their achievement.
The course, which has been officially measured using a Jones counter, is a challenging one, but it takes in some of the most beautiful views along the shores of Lough Corrib.
Starting in the heart of Oughterard village, the race continues out along the lakeside on the high road and back into Oughterard via the scenic Glann road.
Registration is available online via RunIreland.com and also on the day at the Boat Inn from 12 noon. Chip timing will be used so all competitors will get an exact time. Water stations will be provided along the route.
An après-10k barbecue with music will take place outside the Boat Inn directly after the race. Prizes will be presented to the overall top three male and female finishers, as well as fastest male and female in the over 60 and under 18 categories. There will also be plenty of prizes for the local participants with prizes given for fastest local workplace, fastest local club, and fastest estate, with the fastest overall team being awarded a perpetual trophy.
Race organiser Cliodhna Ruane says: “A lot of people may not be aware that Oughterard is home to one of Ireland's Olympians, Mick Molloy. Mick competed for Ireland in the marathon at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico and he held numerous national titles and in 1974 broke the 30 mile world record on the Walton track in London. It is great to see the running tradition continuing so strongly in his home town.”
All profits from the event will help develop a fitness and recreation park for the Oughterard community.
