Since its beginning, the AIDS West candlelit memorial service has become a firm favourite with the people of Galway and this year, the 21st anniversary of AIDS West, they will be treated to a double helping of festive music when the award-winning choir Cois Cladaigh will perform two concerts to commemorate World AIDS Day.
The candlelit memorial service, which is free to the public, takes place on World AIDS Day, Monday December 1, at 8pm in St Nicholas’ Church. The choir’s programme will include music from the 12th to the 20th centuries, such as ‘In Dulci Jubilo’, Bach’s ‘Christmas Greetings’ and a Christmas medley as well as some Christmas favourites such as ‘O’ Holy Night’. They will be joined by our ever popular Galway soloists Delia Boyce and Sandra Schalks, who have kindly offered their services again this year.
The other date to mark is Cois Cladaigh’s annual concert on Saturday November 29, also in St Nicholas' Collegiate Church at 8pm, when the choir will perform its rich repertoire of Renaissance and contemporary music. All proceeds from this concert go to AIDS West.
World AIDS Day is an opportunity for Galwegians to come together and remember nearly 5,000 Irish people living with HIV as well as the 40 million HIV positive people worldwide. As it is the 21st anniversary of the organisation it is also an occasion for AIDS West to acknowledge the many kind and generous people who have played a role in the development of the organisation throughout those years.
The candlelit memorial service is free of charge and everyone is welcome.
