Galway has a new Triple Crown winner in Galway Lawn Tennis Club member Donal McGoldrick.
McGoldrick was part of the first Irish Veterans (super seniors ) Men’s 65 tennis team that won the Triple Crown in their age group at the Four Nations Tournament at the Bolton Arena recently. They beat Scotland 3-0, Wales 2-1, and were 1-1 after the singles against England when Donal teamed up with George Lucas (Belfast ) to beat the English pair of Mike Hepker and Geoff Cliff, 6-3, 6-7, 10-5 in the third-set championship tie breaker.
In 2008 the multi-capped Galway man completed a personal Triple Crown with singles victories over the same three countries in Wrexham in the Irish over 60 team. Raised in Presentation Road, McGoldrick lives in Knocknacarra and is a semi-retired professor of medicine.
