Galway nurse elected to INMO

A Galway nurse, Mr James Geoghegan, has been elected a second vice president of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

A staff nurse in Galway University Hospital, Mr Geoghegan was elected at the organisation’s annual delegate conference in Killarney last weekend.

Mr Geoghegan has served on the INMO’s executive council for the last two years and will now serve as second vice president for the 2012-2014 period.

Currently secretary of the Galway Branch, Mr Geoghegan trained in Galway University Hospital and has worked mostly in GUH since qualifying, having worked for a short period in Australia.

Speaking following his election, Mr Geoghegan said: “One of my goals is that all new qualifying nurse/midwifery graduates would be offered regular employment in the Irish health service as we cannot continue to export these bright young professionals to other countries when they are badly needed here.

“I will also continue to highlight the issues facing nurses/midwives within the workplace and the difficulties that we face on a day to day basis stemming from the moratorium and other imposed service curtailments.”
