Galway African Film Festival

Festival to be launched tomorrow evening

AWARD-WINNING movies from Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, South Africa, and Rwanda will be shown in the Nuns Island Arts Theatre for the fifth Galway African Film Festival.

The Galway African Film Festival will be officially launched tomorrow at 5.30pm in the NUI Galway Huston School of Film & Digital Media, across from the Galway Cathedral.

The festival, now in its fifth year, will run from May 25 to 27 with the aim of presenting an African view on Africa through film. Among the films to be shown will be Viva Riva (winner of the first MTV Best African Movie Award ), Kinyarwanda (audience winner, Sundance ) and All I Wanna Do (best director, World Music and Independent Film Festival ). There will also be a screening of the award-winning Anchor Baby for post-primary schools.

Festival highlights include Viva Riva, about a Congolese small time hustler; two Egyptian films about the Arab Spring in 2011; and an Ethiopian/British co-production, Town Of Runners. The opening film will be the docu-drama All I Wanna Do from Morocco.

Sunday May 27: This Is My Africa (2008, Nigeria ) directed by: Zina Saro-Wiwa; Town Of Runners (2012, Ethiopia ) directed by Jerry Rothwell; and Anchor Baby (2010, Nigeria ), directed by: Lonzo Nzekwe.

The event is one of only two African Film Festivals in Ireland and is organised by the Galway One World Centre in conjunction with the Galway Film Society and the Huston School of Film & Digital Media. It is supported by Irish Aid Africa Day, the Galway City Council, the Galway Advertiser, and iSupply.
