Doing your Christmas shopping in Galway will support Galway businesses, create new jobs, and save some that are at risk. This is the message behind the Sp€nd Christmas in Galway campaign.
The Galway Chamber will again roll out its Sp€nd Christmas in Galway campaign for the upcoming festive season. It will be launched by the Mayor of Galway Cllr Padraig Conneely next Monday at 11am in the Galway Chamber offices.
This is the fifth year the chamber has run Sp€nd Christmas in Galway. It aims to encourage people to do as much of their Christmas and New Year shopping as possible in the city. It is estimated that over the Christmas and New Year shopping period Galwegians will spend more than €100 million on Christmas shopping and in the New Year’s sales.
CEO of the Galway Chamber Michael Coyle said Sp€nd Christmas in Galway is trying to send out the message that Galway is a great place to shop; it has a special Christmas shopping experience; it has everything you need so you don’t need to go anywhere else; and it supports Galway businesses; creates new jobs; and save some at risk.
The chamber is concerned that this week’s decision by the British government to reduce VAT by 2.5 per cent will further exacerbate the problem of people from the Republic travelling to the North to do pre-Christmas shopping.
“It is the belief of Galway Chamber that shopping here in Galway is on a par with anywhere else in the country, the finest of shopping is here,” said Galway Chamber president Paul Shelly. “This is a support Galway campaign. Galway Chamber fully endorses it and would like to say to everyone, there is plenty of parking in Galway, use it and join us to Sp€nd Christmas in Galway.”
Galway Chamber will distribute posters for the Sp€nd Christmas in Galway campaign in the coming weeks and urges all business people to enter into the spirit of the campaign and to display these posters in their shop windows. Posters are available by contacting Maeve on 091 -895103. For more information go to www.galwaychamber.com
