Heart and stroke awareness day in Oranmore

A heart and stroke awareness day will take place in Nestor’s Supervalu, Oranmore on Friday, May 11.

Organised by Fine Gael Senator Fidelma Healy Eames and heart and stroke charity Croi, this health initiative will offer locals the opportunity for free health advice and screening.

Shoppers will be offered free healthy eating and weight management advice, heart and stroke prevention tips and free blood pressure checks.

The awareness day will run from 9.30am to 4pm and everyone is welcome. There will be a Croi Heart Health Team on hand throughout the day. There will also be a fundraising bag-pack in Nestor’s Supervalu.

Heart disease is the number one natural cause of death in Ireland, and up to 80% of heart disease cases are preventable through maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Stroke is the second leading cause of disability. CROI, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation, aims to reduce the impact of heart disease and stroke in the west of Ireland.

Speaking at the launch of the event, Senator Healy Eames, who has chosen Croi as her nominated charity for 2012, said that healthy lifestyle habits were vital.

“Heart and stroke still rank among our top two killers in this country. Much can be done to address this by improved lifestyle habits - good nutrition and exercise make a significant difference to the length of our years and the quality of those years,” she said.
