Galway the big winner at Celtic Media Festival

Galway made TV series Corp +_Anam, TG4’s Ó Tholg go Tolg, and Raidió na Gaeltachta were the big winners at the Celtic Media Festival which was held in Derry recently.

Corp + Anam starring Maria Doyle Kennedy and Galway actor Diarmuid de Faoite, beat off stiff competition from Scotland, Wales, and Brittany to take the Drama Series Award.

Produced by Galway based Magamedia, the series, which charts the trials and tribulations of an investigative crime reporter, was commissioned by TG4 and part-funded by the BAI and the Irish Film Board.

Another TG4 series, Ó Tholg go Tolg won the Young People Award. Produced by Red Pepper Productions, the 10 part series was commissioned by TG4 and saw Áine Goggins and camera woman Maeve Hackett couchsurf their way across Europe, interviewing the people they met along the way.

“It is gratifying to see our work standing up to competition from the best from Scotland, Wales and indeed Ireland,” said TG4 director-general Pól Ó Gallchóir. “Awards like these reaffirm our conviction that quality will travel well and appeal to a wider audience, irrespective of original language.”

Raidió na Gaeltachta also enjoyed success at the festival, taking the Radio Station of the Year award while presenter Frances Nic Géadaigh took home the award for Radio Personality of the Year.

Speaking at the announcement, Edel Ní Chuireáin, ceannaire of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, said, “Taking home the Torc for Radio Station of the Year for two years in a row is a tremendous honour, but winning this award as we celebrate 40 years on air makes it particularly special.”
