Work is to start on the new Oranmore Railway Station which, when opened, will service the Limerick and Dublin railway lines and provide commuter access to Galway city.
Planning permission was granted for the new 174 metre platform and a 150 bay car park last year. The Galway County Council is to begin preparatory work on the car park and access road while the CIE is to advertise for tenders for the new platform.
The news has been welcomed by Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish.
“Once this station is completed it will serve the east of Galway city and county and could remove a considerable amount of traffic congestion from the city,” he said, “and provide a viable alternative for commuters
