The end of April will see books, readings, writers, prose, poetry, and theatre celebrated and enjoyed throughout the city when the Cúirt festival begins next week.
The Cúirt International Festival of Literature will be officially opened on Tuesday April 24 at 6pm in the Commercial Boatclub, Woodquay. The guest speaker will be Druid’s artistic director Garry Hynes. There will also be food from Cava restaurant in Dominick Street.
This year’s festival runs from April 24 to 29 with most events taking place in the Town Hall Theatre. Galway can look forward to readings from leading Irish writers such as John Banville, Paul Durcan, and Rita Ann Higgins, as well as writers from abroad like Manuel Rivas, David Mitchell, Ruth Padel, and Louise Stern. There will also be theatre, masterclasses, and children’s events across the city and county.
As well as the formal events, Galwegians can also enjoy checking out the various authors in a more informal and impromptu manner through the Cúirt Read Me, I’m Yours initiative.
With Read Me, I’m Yours, the public can expect to find novels, stories, and poetry volumes in participating venues around town, complete with information on the authors’ Cúirt appearance in the form of a bookmark. Run your fingers over Cloud Atlas, take a dip in The Sea, have a natter over Chattering or see what Dear Ghosts will reveal. Read the book, return it, swap it, discuss it: the literature is free to borrow.
